The Northside Hospital Medical Lab Scientist Residency is a comprehensive one-year program designed to prepare aspiring laboratory professionals for a successful career as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. Through a structured curriculum and hands-on clinical training, residents gain experience in key disciplines, including phlebotomy, lab safety, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, and blood bank.

The program features guided learning plans and ongoing competency assessments to support continuous skill development and ensure residents remain on track throughout their training. Participants may pursue either a Categorical or Generalist certification. Upon completion of the residency, graduates are equipped with the knowledge, practical experience, and confidence needed to sit for and successfully pass the national Medical Laboratory Scientist certifying examination.

Using advanced laboratory systems and technology, you’ll contribute to comprehensive clinical and anatomic pathology services across inpatient, outpatient, and physician practice settings. Our broad range of laboratory specialties includes hematology, microbiology, automated chemistry, transfusion and tissue bank, flow cytometry, hematopoietic stem cell, and molecular and bio repository services, providing residents with exposure to a diverse and dynamic clinical environment.

Northside’s Medical Lab Scientist Residency has helped many ambitious individuals, such as Northside Medical Technologist I, Madeline, grow into a fulfilling laboratory career. Madeline began her career journey at Northside as a core laboratory technical assistant. Upon completion of the Residency program, she was promoted to the role of Medical Technologist I.

“The lab and all of its career opportunities are often ignored in the scientific field,’ says Madeline. “The Residency program allowed me to use my biology degree to advance my career in the medical field.”

What made the biggest impact on Madeline was how comprehensive the Residency program was. As she recalls, “The main lab is divided into five departments, and I had to complete training in each of them before I could sit for the exam. I worked in every department of the lab, learning every little detail about every test that we do. The information I learned through the program taught me so much about medicine and gave me real-world experience that I was able to utilize during my certification exam.”

“I love working in the lab here at Northside because I get to see every aspect of medical care. We see every single patient that comes into the hospital, from babies in the NICU to oncology patients at the Infusion Center. The Medical Lab Scientist Residency program provided me with the knowledge I need to support each unique patient, and I am extremely grateful that I got the opportunity to help start this program. You see something different every single day in the lab, and it can be such a great opportunity to learn about the care that goes into treating patients.”
